So in our own little piece of irony for the weekend, after spending 7 days stressed that my parents were going to get clobbered by hurricane Irene down in the Outer Banks, we were the ones to have a power outage thanks to the storm. After deciding to stick out at home despite the mandatory evacuation, we were anxious my family had made the wrong move until we saw Irene was going to be down to a category 1 storm. My parents live in a fairly high area of the OBX (if you can call 20 ft above sea level high) so weren't worried about flooding, just wind. Their neighborhood has buried power lines and due to that and being pretty sheltered they never lost power. With the exception of some downed branches and a few paint shingles that need to be replaced, they fared really well. Hopefully this doesn't lull my family in to a sense of security that makes them stay on the island the next time a big storm comes around!
So after checking in on my family about 5 times yesterday around Noelle's rainy but fun 2nd birthday party, we cleaned up the house as the gusts of wind began last night. While the rain had been bad since noon or so, the wind didn't pick up until night fall. When I woke up for one of my 6 nightly bathroom breaks around 3, I immediately could tell the air conditioning was no longer on. Just before 7 I realized the rain had let up substantially. The power was still out but I got up to race Maddie out for a bathroom break as she had refused to go outside the night before due to the downpours of rain. The rain was just a drizzle but the wind was crazy! I didn't see any noticeable damage outside though.
Noelle and Bryan got up soon after we got back in and we actually enjoyed a nice powerless day. Noelle played with toys and we did lots of reading. Noelle asked for Dora a few times and told us the TV did work when we explained the power was out, but she didn't get frustrated when it didn't turn on. After we quickly removed a bunch of food from the fridge at noon to have a big lunch and naps for all 3 of us, we took a super long family walk around 3 to the main road to check for downed trees and the status of the traffic light. Despite thinking to myself a few times that this was the kind of walk that would throw someone just a little closer to their due date in to labor we returned to our street just as the power was coming back on around 5. It was actually a pretty relaxing day.
So after trying to convince my parents to evacuate here we were the ones that lost power. But overall we both fared really well. Even our milk was fine in the fridge, no trees in our yard came down, and with the exception of a little dampness in the basement, our house is fine. We hope everyone else faired well!

Happy 2nd Birthday, Noelle!
For the second year in a row, we were able to be on vacation at my parent's house for Noelle's birthday. While her big present (a play kitchen)didn't make the trip, pretty much everything else did, and Noelle received and opened way more gifts than she probably should have for being 2 years old! Thanks to all of our family members for their generosity!
Noelle likes presents, but cards are pretty cool too!
Unwrapping is always fun!
The camera she got was a big hit!
Noelle also got some clothes, an art easel, art supplies, a watch, play food for her kitchen, some new blocks, a Mickey Mouse "laptop", and a game. What a lucky girl! You may notice her clothes are different in the pictures - just like Christmas, and particularly from the exhausting nature of the sun and swimming and playing all day, opening sessions didn't last long so we had to open about 4 gifts at a time at 3 different times. She absolutely loved everything though!
We also celebrated Noelle with a special kabob dinner and ice cream cake. Noelle especially enjoyed the cake!
Noelle didn't have a birthday party at home last summer with friends since she was so little, but now that we have connected with more families in our area, she has a lot more friends, so we are having a little party for her next Saturday. We are excited to have a low-key affair next weekend to continue to celebrate our little one turning 2! We especially wanted to make a big deal out of how she is a big girl now since she has already been showing some signs of jealousy of her impending baby brother. Hopefully she'll think about how much we love her during all those feedings and diaper changes soon to reenter our lives!

When Will Alien Arrive?
Now that we are nearing the homestretch with Alien, we thought we'd let people take some guesses as to when the little guy will arrive. I'm sure you all noticed the huge calendar at the top of the page. If you want to guess when Alien will make his big debut, post a comment here with your name and date. Every few days we will add names to the calendar. For reference, Alien is officially due October 11th. At our 20 week sonogram they confirmed his due date within 1 day of accuracy. Since he is a second baby and Noelle was already pretty big, my midwife will check everything at my 38 week appointment on September 30th and strip my membranes to attempt to encourage him to arrive a bit early. And if you have been following along since our first pregnancy, you may recall Noelle was born between her original due date of August 4th and her modified date based on her measurements at the 20 week ultrasound of August 18th on the morning of the 16th. Since I am healthy as long as the baby is doing ok, our midwife will let me go to 41 weeks before scheduling an induction.
So that's the info - get guessing! I'm going with October 7th!

Fun at the Playground
While at the beach, we went to the neighborhood playground two mornings. The first started out on a sour note when two unleashed neighborhood dogs ran out of the pond nearby and jumped up on us, soaking our clothes with nasty water. But we quickly dried and got over the annoyance, and Noelle enjoyed the swings, climbing, monkey bars, and slides. On our second excursion, Noelle got a special birthday treat - mommy, daddy, and grandmom all came with her to the playground, and despite it being crazy hot and sunny, she had a great time showing off her skills.

Our Little Fish
Noelle loved our vacation, and was a big fan of both the beach and the pool. We were actually a little nervous she would dislike the beach since after deciding the water in Ocean City in July was "too cold" she had been talking about not going in the water ever since. But when we arrived, she discovered that the ocean in August in the OBX was much warmer and was less resistant to being near it. She wasn't a big fan of just wading in herself at first, instead she wanted daddy to carry her out in the waves and hold her where it was deep! By the last day though, she was running back and forth in to the water to fill buckets for her sandcastles or to jump the waves, and our nervousness moved in the other direction - that she was a bit too comfortable with the ocean! Here are some pictures of our little ocean fish!
This is how Noelle ended up (the only change was which lap she was in!) each day after swimming!
While she enjoyed the ocean, Noelle LOVED swimming in the pool. With her swim vest and swimmies, she wanted to travel the pool all by herself! She is quite a little swimmer and close to being able to float on her own on her front. We just need to work on the whole closing your mouth thing when you put your face in and then she'll be ready to rock and roll down the swim lanes!
Dakota enjoys the pool too and made himself quite comfortable!

Two Years Old!
It is so hard to believe but our little one turned 2 on Tuesday. We'll cone back to the beach and birthday posts after we download pictures, but I wanted to write a little about Noelle at 2! At her appointment today, Noelle was 28 pounds and 3 oz (75%) and 36 inches tall (95%) - crazy! She has been staying steady percentile wise with her weight since birth but has gotten even taller than she had been in the last 6 months. Quite a shock to this short mommy but since Noelle has the looks and personality of a Saxton it isn't totally surprising. We hope she continues on this trend so she'll be over 5'5 when she is full grown but we'll see!
Noelle has been doing well most nights in her big girl bed and generally sleeps from about 8:15 to somewhere between 6 and 7 in the morning. Bedtime routine consists of a bath, pajamas, tooth and hair brushing, 2 books, prayers, and kisses before being tucked in. She remains a hit and miss napper but most days she does sleep for a bit in the early afternoon. About three times a week she takes a long nap in the 2 hour range.
Noelle is very verbal and speaks in sentences and seems to know most words. Her favorite thing to ask is "how does this work?" which drives her mommy and daddy a little crazy at times! She is super active and likes to run and climb and jump. She is quite fast but a bit of a klutz and constantly has bruises on her legs and head from crashing in to things! Her best friends are Oliver and Katushka from daycare but she probably has about 6 more little ones within a month or so of her age in our playgroup. She is on her best behavior at other people's houses and usually when we are out and about but is quite mischievous at our house, Ms. Rose's, and my parents.
Noelle loves her "Violet" dog at bedtime, her baby, books, trucks, and her new camera. Her favorite books are What Makes a Rainbow, Very Hungry Caterpillar, Go Dogs Go!, and Kid Tea. She also loves art projects and we are excited to check out her new easel where she can paint, do chalk, and use dry erase crayons and markers.
Noelle loves breakfast and fruit snacks and could eat most fruit all day long. She eats most of her veggies and loves cheese, yogurt, and milk but isn't much of a meat eater. Ice cream is a new discovery and probably her very favorite food! She isn't really a picky eater in terms of food, she just eats less as the day goes on and rarely wants to have dinner, no matter whether it is pizza or something much more healthy. We continue to give Noelle only water and milk although we may start doing watered down juice soon now that she is going to the bathroom a lot less frequently (5 times a day was a bit much although from what I have heard it is better than the opposite problem!) and can cut down from whole milk to skim.
So that is the 2 year report! I figure if I blog about everything here when I finally get around to putting it all in her baby book I'll know where to find the information! We can't wait to see what Noelle does over the next year and look forward to watching her interact with her baby brother in just a month and a half!

Jockey's Ridge
Vacation, finally! Although any trip with Noelle is hard to consider a vacation, what with 6 am (at the latest) wake-up calls and her constant motion! But still, we are excited to be at the beach!
After a late Thursday night/Friday morning arrival and some initial craziness at 12:30 in the morning as everyone got introduced to the new Hayhoe puppy, we got right in to the swing of things and hit the beach and pool Friday. Not wanting to miss out on any of the fun the OBX offers, we decided despite our 3 hours of sleep, what could be more fun than climbing huge sand dunes with an almost 2 year old and a 12 week old puppy! Actually, it was pretty fun, although not something I'd highly recommend to women enterring their 8 month of pregnancy!
The Sand Dunes
If you haven't been to Jockey's Ridge and the OBX, you certainly should go. Basically it is a park that consists of huge sand dunes right between the ocean and sound where the island is at one of its thinest points. Every day, people hang glide and parasail, and in the evenings they have ranger-lead sunset programs that are just beautiful. We didn't stay for that since we wanted Noelle to get a good night sleep after the previous night, but we climbed the hill, people watched for a bit, and then most of the group enjoyed the requisite run down the "big" hill to the bottom.
We Made it Almost to the Top (and I Didn't Go in to Labor!)
Daddy and Noelle Run Down the Hill (While Mommy Walks Down the Less Steep Part to Avoid Rolling Down Like a Bowling Bowl)
Accidental Family Portrait
After Noelle's trip up and then down the big dune, she couldn't quite walk back to the parking lot. Since her "mean" mommy and daddy wouldn't carry her, she had to resort to this!
All in all it was a fun experience! We'll post on the beach and pool soon!

Hoping and Wishing...
Over the past 4 days, we have spent time with 3 babies between 2 weeks and 3 months old. Each one of them was so calm over the several hours we saw them. They laid on blankets or in their pack and plays and babbled and remained chill and unfussy while we hung out with their mommies and daddies. With Noelle, when we were going through it, we never really thought of her as a particularly high maintenance baby, but since we were the first of our local friends really to have a newborn, we didn't have anything to compare her behavior against. And she was always a good eater and slept in her crib at night (in stretches) from very early on, thank goodness. But as we interract with other very little ones, we can't help but remember how our little Ellie would never let us put her down from the moment she woke up in the morning to the moment we all went to sleep at night for the first 3 months of her life or so. Yes, it was nice to have a snuggler who wanted to be close to mommy or daddy, and she was happy if she was touching us, but the fact that every nap and waking moment was on top of us, did make things a bit difficult. And we all definitely remember the fact that with the exception of one short month in June 2010 or so, none of us slept through the night until this past January. It's hard to believe that my stubborn, independent toddler who is so daring now was the baby we are remembering that was so clingy! Well, the stubborn part was present I guess!
So over the past few days we have been hoping and wishing that Alien is a bit more chill than his big sister. While the most important thing is just that he is healthy, if he wants to add being a calm, happy little guy who just likes to watch the world and take it all in to his characteristic list we'd be pretty excited. It certainly will make life easier if he'll let us get other things done and will definitely endear him to his sister! Only 2 more months til our due date!

Just a Quick Update
I survived summer programs 2011! Yay! With the exception of my long commutes and the day I spent last week checking hair for lice (yes, it was as fun as you are imagining), it was a pretty easy summer work wise. Thank goodness! With this heat that just won't stop and my extremely fast and boisterous almost 2 year old, I needed a summer that went smoothly!
On the home front, Noelle loves sleeping in her big girl bed. Well, at night she loves sleeping in it! Last night was my first night putting her to bed by myself since the switch a week ago, and after she "read" me and her baby two stories (Go Dogs Go, and another one that she decided was Snuggle Puppy but wasn't) she put the books away, prayed with me, and got right in to bed. After I kissed her she told me to leave and sleep tight and I didn't hear another peep from her room. Success! Now, nap time is another story. Unless we put her in the bed already asleep (thank goodness she still transfers successfully from the car to naps 90% of the time), she assumes naps are unnecessary and that if they absolutely must happen, they must occur in our bed. This makes chores that could be done while she is asleep unsuccessful, particularly laundry since our washer and dryer are in our bathroom, but at least it gives me an excuse to rest while she naps!
Alien's clothes are sorted by size and his crib is ready with a new mattress. Over Labor Day weekend I plan on doing lots of baby laundry and finding and cleaning bottles and newborn accessories. We are going to install the car seats in mid-September and then we should be just about ready to go. I had an ultrasound for the fetal study yesterday and he is now head down! And as of my last midwife appointment 2 weeks ago, he was measuring about 2 weeks ahead size-wise. They think he'll probably come a few days before my due date and that we are looking at a 9-pounder based on the fact that he is my 2nd and a boy and Noelle was over 8 pounds. While I don't look forward to pushing him out at that size, we do look forward to having another good sized baby. I'm not sure we'd know what to do with a 6 pounder!
Bryan is doing well too. Work has slowed down a bit and he has been hard at work on our first floor bathroom. I told him it is slightly inconvenient for a pregnant woman to have to run upstairs every 5 seconds to pee, but he remains unsympathetic as he retorts that we didn't have a first floor bathroom in the townhouse when I was pregnant with Noelle. But the room is totally torn apart, he has done a ton of patching and sanding of the walls since they were in horrible shape, and put a new sub-floor in. The trim, door, and ceiling are painted and we hope the walls will be done this week. That just leaves the floor and installation of the new vanity, light fixture, and old toilet which should all be pretty quick. Bryan is also doing well at work. He was selected to be a firm representative with a large network of international law firms. This is definitely an honor but means he will be in Maine for 2 days in late September. Let's hope that Alien waits til October to arrive! We are also relieved that his softball season is over as it means that his chance of breaking a bone has signifcantly diminished for 2011, and that we see him more often in the evenings!
So that is the current report. Our next post will be pictures from the beach! We are hoping my parents new puppy doesn't eat Noelle and Maddie for breakfast while we are there!

24 Hours
This time tomorrow summer programs 2011 will be officially over and I should be out of Alexandria, VA back on my way to Baltimore for good for this year! I can not wait.
Despite having a pretty easy summer with the programs (and it is hard to complain about my sites when I get to sleep in my own bed each night unlike my colleagues who for the most part are sleeping in uncomfortable dorm beds for the majority of it), I am exhausted and need a rest. For some reason, despite having a better pregnancy in many ways this time around, my body is totally worn down. Perhaps it has been the almost daily 90 minute each way commutes, or my fever/migraines of late July, or most probably it is just caring for my very rambunctious almost 2 year old while trying to keep the house some semblance of clean and a healthy dinner on the table at least most of the time. But whatever it is, I am ready for a vacation and then my regular 7-5, 4 days a week work schedule.
So here is to the last 24 hours being drama free and not having to worry about my work cell phone ringing for the next 45 weeks!

Loving Her New Bed?
On Saturday we moved Noelle out of her converted crib toddler bed into her big girl forever full size bed. Bryan moved the furniture upstairs all around, and Alien now has a crib and a bunch of clothes in size piles in his room. It is kind of crazy, but our unborn son definitely already has more clothes than our almost 2 year old daughter has ever had. Thanks friends for all the hand me downs!
Noelle was either super tired, or a little bit sick (she is getting a new molar and she and Bryan have been showing signs of a cold), but she took an off and on nap (mostly on) for over 4 hours that day. She wasn't super excited at first to sleep in her new bed, and nap time started with her running down the hall to our bed where she fell asleep for the first stretch. Bryan then carried her to her bed, and after lying down next to her for a few minutes she slept in there for about 90 minutes. She then woke up, calmly walked down the stairs, and cuddled up next to her daddy on the chaise for another 2 hours. She showed us a variety of sleeping positions in which to get comfy:

Bedtime went a bit better and after just one little nudge in to her bed instead of the hallway, she got in and didn't whine or cry. She did wake up twice, once and went back to sleep with some gentle coaxing, and the other at 5:42 ready to get up for the day. I guess that is what happens when you take a 4 hour nap! So hopefully the next few days will see her getting more and more used to her new bed as we get ready for Alien's arrival in just over 2 months!
