It took us a long time to get here, but my love for Hopkins (the hospital) is now great. We had another follow-up for Noelle yesterday at the clinic down there and despite the detours and red lights all over the city and having to wait past our appointment time, I love it.
I love having people that listen. People that care about my daughter, and talk to both of us like we are real people and that they understand what we are going through. The nurse practitioner that runs the program and her assisting nurse are awesome. They praise us both for our successes, offer suggestions, get my daughter excited about the progress she is making and what needs to be done, and give it to us straight about where we need to go. They utilize medicine when it is necessary but are also really great with behavioral strategies that help. I think it is cool that the team includes a behavioral therapist who works with us specifically on issues related to Noelle's medical condition. I love that we are already talking about getting a 504 plan for Noelle for Kindergarten so that we can make sure that she is in a real classroom and has a teacher who understands her needs. I love that they say part of this is going to really suck but we need you to do x,y, or z like they actually recognize this isn't all a cake walk. I love that they expect us not to follow through on everything they want us to do because let's be real, no one really has time for that, and they help us prioritize what is really important. I love that they never point out when I tear up in the office because I am so happy and so sad all at once that we are there but that we are finally getting answers and help. And I love that they give my daughter a prize when we leave and talk to her about princesses and Disney and school and math and whatever else she is interested in at the time.
Noelle is a trooper. She is doing awesome and has made such great progress these past 4 months. We will likely be going to the clinic for years though, every 8-10 weeks for now and maybe less often later as she grows. It is nice to know that at least when we are there we are getting real help from people we are starting to really love. I guess I need to add the JHH Clinic folk to my Christmas card list for the foreseeable future!

We've Got The Beat
Yay... we are The Fresh Beat Band
Saturday the 18th we bundled up, headed to the city and daddy's parking garage, and walked over to the Arena for the kids' first concert, Fresh Beat Band. Noelle has always been a fan of the Nick Jr show. Kellen is a fan of all music. We missed them last time they were in town so this time we got tickets early, not knowing their popularity has clearly diminished in the last year and we could buy them on certifikid for way less later. Oh well!
We got to the show on time for us, early for the rest of the world apparently, so took some pictures as we got ready for things to get started.
Then things got started. We were in the "cheap seats" so I couldn't get any pictures that were decent of the stage and the singers, especially with my phone, but you can see that Noelle and Kellen, and even Bryan surprisingly, were really enjoying the singing and dancing. Noelle was being shy at first but finally got up from her seat to dance and spin around towards the end of the action.
The concert was pretty short, about 90 minutes including a 15 minute intermission, but it was perfect for their first concert outing. Highlights were when Twist ran up to our section for high fives and then the kids singing and dancing like crazy after the concert as they told us how great each song the Fresh Beats sang at the concert had been.
I guess you could say "It was a great day, the very best day..."

Winter Play date Adventures
Our post-New Years, end of holiday break, beginning of getting our lives back to normal, has had a variety of winter adventures. First up was a visit to the Ellicott City B&O Museum with friends. Apparently the display is much cooler during the holidays so we went to check it out and the kids had a lot of fun despite the small size of the museum. The lego train display was particularly impressive.
Later that week before I returned to work we had several kids over to play and "cook." No, I am not crazy, we simply let the 4 year olds make yogurt, fruit, and granola parfaits. They were concentrating quite intensley so I didn't get any good pictures but the kids had fun and felt accomplished and everything was yummy. The mommies and little kids also got a treat, but we designed our own concoctions.
The Saturday morning after our big mom night event, Noelle hosted friends for some princess time. The girls brought their princess gear, they took turns wearing the different dresses and accessories, had lunch, and watched part of Little Mermaid. My favorite picture is of Julia helping Noelle get ready. I have high hopes that this picture will be featured at a rehearsal dinner one day after the girls stay friends through the years. We'll see!
Lastly, we have gotten back in to our mom and kid dinner routine. Our most recent (and my favorite choice, I think) dinner was breakfast for dinner. Kellen especially enjoyed the pancakes on a stick that Erin brought, but the mommies liked the egg bake and everyone loved the sausage and fruit as well. Yum!
With the crazy cold weather this winter, I have been thankful for our indoor play dates and for time to get our energy out with friends. I hope it finally warms up soon - this polar vortex stuff is for the penguins!

Minute to Win It Mom Night
The Friday after we all returned to work and school, Bryan took the kids over to a friends, and I hosted about 35 moms from my group for a fun get to know you and act like a fool mom night. We started the evening with a little ice breaker I am sure most of you have seen before. Becki, Caitlin, and I created index cards of famous women (real and imagined) and everyone had to guess which one was on their back using yes or no questions. We though this one was perfect for Suzanne with her sweatshirt for the night!
After everyone arrived and we got settled, the moms spread out either to talk by the food and drinks or to play a variety of minute to win it games spread throughout our basement and first floor. I used the game site to come up with all the games and we had eight to choose from:
Blow Ball
By A Thread
Chop Stack
Face the Cookie
Junk in the Trunk
Noodle Around
Nose Dive
Play It By Ear
You can see the official rules and videos of all the games on the game show site, but I tried to range the games from some that were totally crazy (junk in the trunk, nose dive) to super chill (play it by ear, by a thread). I didn't get shots of all the games in action, and some of the pictures I did get weren't great, but I think you can get an idea of
1. how serious some of us are about our games and winning, and
2. how much fun people were having playing some of the games.
Here some of the moms are noodling around, AKA trying to pick up 6 penne noodles with spaghetti and deliver them to the bowl in the center of the table in 60 seconds. We modified this game slightly.
Beth tries to blow the balls so that only the three marked balls remain on the tray.
Lorena's got some junk in the trunk.
Marisa works on putting the penny cans in order in play it by ear.
Showing my own moves in junk in the trunk.
Caitlin and Mandy work those cotton balls in nose dive while Melissa times their efforts.
And really I have no idea if these moms left the food. Not that it wasn't all tasty...
With a growing group of moms, it was nice to get out and talk to some new faces while also enjoying time with the friends I see more often. As my kids get older, I really want newer moms in the area to have the kind of support that I have had and I hope this event was a good way to get to know each other a bit better and to be silly for a few hours. We'll definitely have a part 2, it just needs to wait til deck weather!

No Love for the Blog
Thus far 2014 has been great but I am totally uninspired to write anything for the blog. Oops. I promise I'll get back to frequent posting again soon about our events since we seem to be doing as many as ever, just as soon as I catch up on a major lack of sleep from 2009 on. In the meantime, here is what has been going on the past week or so:
1. Kellen used the potty! Ok, it was this morning, and after he went pee he told daddy it was scary, but we made a big deal, gave him a spree (yes they still make these and we gave him massive amounts of sugar at 6:12 am), and by the time he got to daycare he was bragging to his older friend Justin about the experience. We'll see if we get a repeat performance. I am hoping my son who first went on the potty almost a year later than his sister did will end up being much easier to potty train after all of our drama in this camp with Noelle.
2. Bryan got a new iPad. It is super cool and was basically free after we account for the technology money his work gives him. Not that we needed any more technology in our life. We are trying to use the old iPad to bribe Noelle in to dryness at nights. So far, not working, although she is excited about the prospect. In the meantime, Bryan has stripped youtube and the internet off the old one in case she does shock us and earns the bribe soon. Since that girl is better with technology than I am, we can at least assure she is playing and watching only 4-year old things during any technology time. And yes, we are not beyond bribery with expensive items in our house at this point. Once Noelle is finally dry at night she gets the iPad (within limits) and her room painted. Come on, sweetie, you can do it!
3. Kel and Noelle are signed up for summer preschool. Well I registered them. We won't know if they got in for a few weeks. Noelle will hopefully go all day Tuesdays and then both kids will go Thursday mornings in the summer. I am hoping to get Noelle used to full-day school before she starts Kindergarten at the end of August. And one morning a week will nicely adjust K in to a more formal setting I am hoping. Kel is signed up for 3 mornings in the fall but only because we don't know about transportation yet. We learned that Ms. Rose can take and pick up Noelle from school but would only be able to pick up Kel with the other school start times. That means we either find a friend that can take him Tuesday and/or Thursday mornings (any volunteers?) or I give up my Friday mornings with him and send him on my day off. It would be nice to do errands and cleaning on my own on Fridays for a few hours but the idea of not doing playdates with our friends anymore Friday mornings makes me sad. We have a while to figure it out so we'll see what happens.
4. I am busy planning Disney trips. Shocking! Noelle and I's surprise trip with my mom is in a few short weeks and our big family trip is in May. It looks like my parents and brother will join us for the magic for at least part of that trip. Bryan and I are trying to squeeze one more couples trip in before our passes expire Labor Day but we'll see if that pans out. Who I am kidding? Save for retirement or college? No way, Disney will totally pay off down the road, right? We are making memories here people!
5. Noelle started dance last week. It is ballet and tap for 3-5 year olds and I kind of love it because it is as informal as it comes. No one cares if her hair is in a bun or if I roll in at 5:01 pm because there was traffic on the beltway or, if like last week, I packed my daughter two right foot ballet shoes, one of which is 3 sizes too small and has no match. She really likes it and Kellen is liking playing with cars in the hallway during class so so far, so good. I doubt she is learning much but the location and price are right and this mommy is so not ready for more complicated class and sport commitments. How do people get their kids to all these things? Being a working mom in the school-ages years seems much more complicated than the baby and toddler years but I guess people figure this stuff out.
So that is pretty much it for our excitement. I have posts to do on an awesome mom's night we had last Friday and Noelle's princess playdate but those require picture downloading and my home computer so I'll get on that soon. Well maybe - if inspiration strikes!

Ringing in 2014
We ended 2013 with a whimper. After a night out for margaritas and Mexican food for our anniversary on the 30th (nine years - craziness!), we were in bed at 10:30 New Years Eve. We did have pigs in a blanket as part of our New Years dinner - for some reason I feel that is a requirement, even if it did happen at 5 pm with high chairs involved. And I did wake up for about an hour after the ball dropped to hand off the girls we were sitting for back to their parents. The kids had a nice time and I enjoyed my cozy bed.
New Year's morning we hosted our second annual pajama brunch. It was lots of fun with our local friends and we had yummy food, a good turnout, and the kids played nicely. Since there were about 25 kids between the ages of 2 and 5 (I think Kel was actually the youngest in attendance this year which was weird!) having them all play nicely was pretty miraculous. It was lovely to catch up with friends, and somehow my house was tidy when everyone left. Amazing!
I am excited to see what 2014 holds for our family. And I am making a few resolutions that I hope to stick to this year!
1. Get Healthy Again
I have not been watching what I eat or doing well with exercise with the exception of running. I am going to count calories again at least 5 days a week, do strength training of some sort at least twice a week, and my running goal for the year is 600 miles. I am signed up for a half marathon in May and am seriously considering doing the full Baltimore marathon in October. We'll see. 50 miles a month seems reasonable though at the pace I finished out 2013.
2. Prioritize Family
I am an iPad addict. I am an extrovert who loves to be social. I need to put down the iPad more, say no to more social events, and spend more quality time with the family. I am going to try to make sure all electronics are off when we eat, even if it is frozen waffles Friday mornings or another dinner without daddy. And we are back to blocking off family time on some weekends.
3. Take Time for Me
I need more sleep. I need more down time. Yes, I like to be busy all the time and am an extrovert, but I can't get up at 4:05 and go to bed at 11 every night and be happy and healthy and pleasant. My kids also happen to be really clingy (which is sort of surprising since B and I are not the touchy feely types). They want to be attached to me all the time during our together hours. I need to find more ways to take some me time so that I can be a better mom, wife, worker, and friend.
4. Stick to our Budget
Bryan and I did a pretty good job keeping to our weekly budget this past year. In 2014, my goal is to be under budget most weeks so that we can put money in a house fund. We want a new kitchen, and also need some work outside and some painting inside done. The kitchen is a few years down the road (yay end of daycare and loan payments in 4 years!) but some of the smaller projects need to be done soon.
5. Work on our Prayer Life
I love the prayers of our faith. The fact that everyone around the world is sharing in the same words and readings makes me really happy. But sometimes I think that takes away from some of our other prayer life. I want to do more praying as a family, teach our kids more about Jesus and the bible, and talk to God more often on my own. I am still figuring out how to do this better, but have high hopes for our family in this area in 2014 and I know if I turn it over to God we'll be fine.
So, welcome 2014. I have high hopes that you'll be another fabulous year for the Saxton Four.

Our Second Christmas in Dixie
Ok maybe the Outer Banks aren't quite dixie, but on Christmas day at naptime I headed south to celebrate Christmas part two with the kids, Maddie, and my family. I was foiled on the whole nap thing by my children (Kellen napped for about 12 minutes total when after he finally fell asleep 2.5 hours in to the trip Noelle decided she must use the restroom right now!) but the trip down was traffic free and not too bad. My parents saved their traditional Christmas Eve dinner of prime rib for Christmas night and as always we had a series of lovely meals while at their house.
My parents also just redid their house a bit to make room for my grandmother who moved down there this fall. The basement bedroom now has a great bunk bed. For now, Noelle is sleeping in the bottom bunk. Kellen is partaking in play there during the day but isn't quite big enough to sleep in the bunk bed. He wanted to though, so climbed out of his pack and play that we had placed in that room about 6 zillion times before I moved him in with me upstairs. He was not happy about this at first, but he really is not ready for a big boy bed yet, and I am not ready to move him. In the end, I think he was happy to be in with mommy. Coming from someone who moved my daughter out of her crib at 15 months with no problems at all, I feel like my kids are very different. K loves his crib. I love that he loves his crib. Until we are ready to potty train he'll be in there. Which at the rate he is going will be age 7 so we are happy with that set up! I felt vindicated about my decision not to let Kel sleep in the bunk bed when he bumped his head big time while playing down there our last night in the OBX. The bruise is still spectacular 4 days later.
One evening I adventured with my mom and the kids to a local light, train, and Christmas craziness display. The kids loved it. It was tackiness in all it's holiday glory and pretty fun!
Another day we journeyed down to the aquarium. The kids continue to love that place and now that we have been there three times and the Baltimore zoo twice on our membership we definitely got quite the deal when we became members.
We also enjoyed watching the kids open their presents from my family, lots of playtime in the house, dog walks, a bit of time on the beach in our jackets, and lunch out before we headed home.
The drive home on Sunday wasn't great. But the trip was, so I guess I'll do it again solo if I have to. Hopefully B can just come next time we adventure back to Dixie!
